Transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge in the development of organic agriculture in Switzerland.
Welt der Alpen - Erbe der Welt: Wissenschaftler/Innen berichten über ihre Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse aus der Alpen- und der globalen Gebirgsforschung. Es geht um die aktuelle Dynamik und Langzeitsignale, um Risikomanagement und Nachhaltigkeit, aber auch um Mythen und Lebensalltag sowie um Autonomie und Fremdbestimmung im globalen Zusammenhang. Jeder dieser vier Themenbereiche wird mit einem Einführungsartikel eingeleitet und beinhaltet zwei Beiträge aus den Alpen sowie zwei weitere entweder aus den Anden, dem Karakorum, Kaukasus, Himalaja, den Berggebieten in Ostafrika, Lesotho oder Neuseeland. Nach dem von der UNO proklamierten «Internationalen Jahr der Berge» stellt sich die Frage, was die Geographie leisten kann, um zur nachhaltigeren Entwicklung der Gebirgsräume in einer globalisierten Welt beizutragen.

Die touristisch enorm attraktive Hochgebirgslandschaft des Welterbe-Gebiets steht in direkter Wechselbeziehung mit der Umgebungslandschaft. Das sich daraus ergebende Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Schutz und Nutzung lässt die langfristige Sicherung der von der UNESCO ausgezeichneten Alleinstellungsmerkmale als grosse Herausforderung erscheinen. Erschwerend für das Gebietsmanagement kommt hinzu, dass die Natur- und Kulturlandschaft durch naturbedingte Veränderungsprozesse (Stichwort Klimawandel) sowie durch den (land-)wirtschaftlichen Strukturwandel fortwährend überprägt wird.
Deshalb sind Monitoring- und Controllinginstrumente erforderlich, um Veränderungen zu erkennen und ihren Einfluss auf die Werte und Potenziale des Welterbes einschätzen zu können. Während Datengrundlagen aus bestehenden Monitoringsystemen in einzelnen Bereichen eine wertvolle Ausgangslage darstellen, fehlt bislang ein operationeller Ansatz zur Identifizierung und Überwachung der von der UNESCO dem Gebiet attestierten aussergewöhnlichen natürlichen Schönheit und ästhetischen Bedeutung. Die Operationalisierung von Landschaftsästhetik stellt damit das Kernstück dieser Arbeit dar.
A characterization of the Swiss agriculture could be possible only by trying to get a clear understanding of various state policies and implementations levels; the exposure of Swiss farming system to global change; the identity of farmers; the perception of Swiss citizens on this category of population to whom a large amount of money from their taxes is paid. Only this clear understanding of the multifaceted dimensions and dynamics of the Swiss agriculture could contribute to drawing lessons that Switzerland could teach or learn from other people in the world.
This is the exercise we tried to do in a research project conducted in the Swiss Alps by an international research team from three continents (Africa, Asia, and Europe), aiming at understanding institutions and mechanisms regulating Swiss alpine pasture use. This report presents the remarks and interim results of an interdisciplinary team involving four researchers working on pasture management.

Reducing vulnerability to climate change in the Swiss Alps: a study of adaptive planning
The Alps will experience some of the most pronounced effects of climate change due to a combination of their latitudinal positioning, altitude and unique eco-systems, placing socioeconomic stresses on alpine communities, particularly those that rely on seasonal tourism. How stakeholders need to respond to climate change within the Alps has been well documented in the academic literature, with studies focussing on measures to minimise damage on winter ski tourism and from increased natural hazards. During the winter of 2006/2007 there was increasing academic and media attention on the ability of mountain areas to maintain successful winter tourism. Studies into tourism adaptation within the Swiss Alps have so far focussed on the adaptation options and needs of different stakeholders. These concepts of adaptation measures were tested on stakeholders from the private and public sector within two case study areas within the Swiss Alps, both part of the communes of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jungfrau Aletsch Bietschorn. The qualitative methodology aimed to better ascertain the barriers to adaptation that local communities faced.
Humankind today is challenged by numerous threats brought about by the speed and scope of global change dynamics. A concerted and informed approach to solutions is needed to face the severity and magnitude of current development problems. Generating shared knowledge is a key to addressing global challenges. This requires developing the ability to cross multiple borders wherever radically different understandings of issues such as health and environmental sanitation, governance and conflict, livelihood options and globalisation, and natural resources and development exist.
Global Change and Sustainable Development presents 36 peer-reviewed articles written by interdisciplinary teams of authors who reflected on results of development-oriented research conducted from 2001 to 2008. Scientific activities were – and continue to be – carried out in partnerships involving people and institutions in the global North, South and East, guided by principles of sustainability. The articles seek to inform solutions for mitigating, or adapting to, the negative impacts of global dynamics in the social, political, ecological, institutional and economic spheres.

This Management Plan outlines measures to ensure the long-term preservation of the unique Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn (JAB) World Heritage Site and discusses ways in which its value can be leveraged by the surrounding region. The Management Plan addresses all groups within the administration, the general population, the business sector and civil society who are involved and
interested in the protection and use of the World Heritage Site and its surrounding region. It represents a binding obligation on the part of the JAB World Heritage Site Association to initiate and coordinate the implementation process.
The thesis contributes to an improved understanding of how the ecological dimension becomes manifest in the negotiation of sustainable regional development, how meanings about an issue under negotiation are constructed, and whose ascribed meanings are decisive in concretising a way forward.
Die Natur der Alpen aus Sicht der Profi- und Intensiv-Snwoboarder. Reine Kulissenfunktion oder intensive Beziehung?
"It seems to be increasingly recognised worldwide that the aims of nature conservation or of regional planning can only be achieved with adequate involvement of the concerned communities themselves. This article analyses the social processes during the proposed extension of the Swiss National Park between 1996 and 2000 from a participatory viewpoint. It is based on an analysis of relevant newspaper articles and in-depth interviews with representatives of involved stakeholders. Considering that participation is a very popular, yet contested term, we distinguish between normative (i.e., the aim is participation) and instrumental (i.e., the aim is to achieve predefined goals) participation, notions that supplement rather than exclude each other. While the local population rejected the majority of the proposed extensions of the Park, results show that this should not be perceived as a failure of the process. That the outcome was not perceived by local people to be satisfactory could be explained by the lack of awareness of the basic principles of participatory processes, like openness and transparency of planning, a sufficient timeframe, and independent mediation. These organisational shortcomings resulted in fundamental opposition from groups of local stakeholders and constrained the future development potential of the region."
"In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird untersucht, wie die UNESCO Biosphäre Entlebuch (UBE) und das UNESCO Weltnaturerbe Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn (JAB) visuell und verbal kommuniziert wurden. Bei beiden Vorhaben handelt es sich um Modellregionen für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung, denen die jeweiligen Bevölkerungen in Volksbefragungen zustimmten. Die Analyse der Informationen zu den Vorhaben lässt erkennen, welche Vorstellungen die an der Bildproduktion beteiligten Akteure mit nachhaltiger Entwicklung verbinden. Konkret wird dabei aus humangeographischem Blickwinkel analysiert, welche Raumnutzungen oder Raumaneignungen gemäss den Bild gewordenen Vorstellungen unterschiedlicher Bildproduzierender in einer sich nachhaltig entwickelnden Region erwünscht sind. [...]"
The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Site (WHS) comprises landscapes that are shaped by centuries of traditional agricultural use. Given the dramatic changes in the agricultural sector, the risk faced by cultural landscapes in the Region is possibly greater than that faced by the natural landscape inside the perimeter of the WHS. Maintaining the right balance between preservation of the WHS and promotion of sustainable regional development constitutes a key challenge for management of the WHS. This process made it possible to jointly define the present situation and thus create a basis for legitimising future action. From this participatory process, a link between the concepts of ‘protected area’ and sustainable development
in the region emerged.

This article presents an empirical interdisciplinary study of an extensive participatory process that was carried out in 2004 in the recently established World Natural Heritage Site "Jungfrau–Aletsch–Bietschhorn” in the Swiss Alps. The study used qualitative and quantitative empirical methods of social science to address the question of success factors in establishing and concretizing a World Heritage Site.
Les sites naturels du Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn et du Mont Kenya sont tous deux inscrits au Patrimoine Mondial de l'Unesco. Dans le cas de Grindelwald, le paysage culturel est plus menacé que le paysage naturel protégé du patrimoine mondial, alors que dans le cas du système des hautes et basses terres du Mont Kenya, l'important potentiel en ressources subit une forte pression anthropique. Dans les pays du Nord, où l'apport à une conscience régionale identitaire de la population peut revêtir une importance considérable, la contribution des biens naturels du patrimoine mondial au développement régional durable est probablement plus élevée en termes socioculturels. Dans les pays du Sud, le statut de patrimoine mondial peut assurer la protection des paysages naturels d'un point de vue écologique, mais les pertes potentielles encourues par la population en termes de production primaire ne sont compensées que de façon très limitée.

The Contributions of World Natural Heritage Sites to Sustainable Regional Development
Die Alpen zählen zu den bedeutendsten Erholungs- und Urlaubsgebieten Europas. In der Welterbe-Region ist der Tourismus im Laufe des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts zur Schlüsselbranche der Volkswirtschaft geworden. Dieser Beitrag zeigt die Hintergründe der touristischen Entwicklung auf und stellt die Vielfalt und räumliche Verteilung der Tourismusindustrie in der Welterbe-Region dar. Daraus wird abgeleitet, welche Herausforderung und Chancen sich für die Region im Zusammenhang mit dem Welterbe ergeben.
