Land resource potentials

Sustainable land use systems for enhancing food security and mitigating climate change in semi-arid to sub-humid agricultural environments

Carbon content is key to the health of the earth’s soils, and hence their agricultural productivity. Soils’ ability to retain carbon, preventing its transformation into a greenhouse gas, can play an important role in counteracting climate change. With case studies in Tajikistan, Ethiopia and Kenya, this research project aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for assessing the impact of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) strategies including carbon sequestration, leading to informed decision-making and win-win solutions that harmonise human needs and environmental protection.
