towards food equity and dignity
According to recent statistics, more than one billion people suffer from hunger globally and malnutrition kills a child every six seconds. Yet global levels of food production are more than enough to feed the world’s population – several times over if meat consumption were reduced. Similar to the water crises, the problem is often one of access and control, as conveyed by established concepts such as food security and food sovereignty. In this project, NCCR North-South researchers aim to contribute globally relevant policy advice on ensuring access to sufficient nutritious food, particularly on behalf of vulnerable populations. Harnessing existing programme expertise, the project examines four main land use and food production systems in climatically and topographically diverse regions of Africa and Asia. In each case, the researchers aim to identify sources of risk – like climate variability and market uncertainty – and possibilities for improvement such as market innovations or investments in technology and human capital.
