Flyer on “How to identify ‘target groups’?”

The characterisation of social groups in international development is important but challenging. Though used frequently in intervention strategies, categories such as “the poor”, “local community”, or “the marginalised” can prove difficult to define satisfactorily. Thus, a team led by Prof. Ulrike Müller-Böker of the Development Study Group Zürich (DSGZ), University of Zürich, created a flyer designed to assist development practitioners seeking to distinguish groups according to conceptually sound criteria.

The flyer introduces useful concepts from the social sciences that may be used in identifying target groups. Based on fieldwork in Honduras and Nepal, it offers recommendations on the sensible use of social categories in research and development practice.

The flyer can be downloaded here.
